CHAPTER 15

Thumb Ring Recording 321:

The Kidnapping

I TRY FOR a while to zero in on one after another of the transmissions available once I adapt my system to receive the phone waves. Listening in does not hold my interest for more than a single Klaqin time unit. Coreg’s time-pacing would be useful now, but a way to stop time completely and step outside of it to learn all I could would be better. I wonder if Tratl could come up with a theory and an equation for that.

I hear Selina’s name being called outside. I remove my helmet and check the visual scanners and investigate the area surrounding our starships. Nothing appears at first, then I see Alex crouching between our ships. An Earth animal walks in circles near him, its head to the ground, pushing the white flakes back and forth. They are searching for the time-bender. Here. There is one conclusion to be drawn: Coreg has abducted her.

I slip through the emergency exit on the opposite side and sneak around the front of the Galaxer. I come up behind Alex and his sniffling animal.

“Hey! Marc! You in there?”

“No. I am out here. Hellew.”

Alex turns as quickly as the animal. They both make growling noises. Alex grabs the rein lashed around the animal’s neck, and controls it as it attempts to lunge at me. The small beast makes a loud rough sound like nothing I’ve heard before.

“Where’s Selina? I got a text that she needed help.” Alex’s voice betrays his panic. His face contorts into an expression I read as great misery. I lower my eyes to the animal which bares its teeth as menacingly as a Gleezhian.

I take three quick strides forward and edge around them toward the Intimidator. I touch both hands to two dimples in the ship’s side; it makes a wider opening that way, as if we were going to load cargo. The entire side opens revealing Selina facing Coreg.

“Lay off her!” Alex yells. He releases the animal and jumps up into the cabin. The animal is my immediate threat, but Coreg is on the verge of attacking Selina, so I leap up and grab Coreg, pushing him down into the command chair as if we were in a bridge battle—one that I, for once, will win.

I apply pressure to his neck as we’d been taught to do against an enemy and feel Coreg relax into unconscious obedience. The animal no longer threatens me, but is scratching its hairy and horrible claws on one of the storage bays.

Selina is safe, but Alex has his arms around her and though he could let go because she is in no danger from Coreg now, he does not. My body temperature elevates and I sense a growing emotional reaction: jealousy.

“Are you all right?” Alex’s voice contains the same hoarse anger I heard from the animal a moment ago. I watch Selina stare up into his eyes and visibly loosen her muscles. She holds his gaze too long and I
